Quick Answer
Coen is a Dawnwalker: human by day, vampire by night. The two forms are separate gameplay loops with different abilities, different traversal options and different ways to solve the same objective. Day Coen fights with a sword and can call on magic and witchcraft; night Coen fights with claws and uses supernatural movement, feeding and compulsion.
You cannot choose one and ignore the other — the game gives you both and expects you to use each where it fits.
This is the game’s central idea. Day and night play as two different loops with distinct abilities and different ways to reach the same goal, and which one you use changes what a given objective looks like.
The Two Forms at a Glance
| Human — day | Vampire — night | |
|---|---|---|
| Core combat | Sword, blocking, parries, magic | Claws, bites, supernatural mobility |
| Signature tools | Witchcraft abilities such as Compel Soul, Burning Blood and Astral Communication | Voracious Bite, Shadowstep, Planeshift |
| Traversal | Standard movement and climbing | Cross gaps with Shadowstep; walk on walls and ceilings with Planeshift |
| Healing | Potions, salves and food | Feeding on rats, animals and enemies |
| Investigation | Focus Mode tracking and dialogue | Focus Mode tracking, Compel Soul on the dead |
Playing as a Human
Day Coen is the disciplined version: a sword trained into him by his father, plus access to magic. It is the loop with readable exchanges — blocking, parries and spells rather than improvisation.
- Sword combat is directional. Attacks and blocks both come from angles, with perfect parries and perfect dodges available on timing.
- Witchcraft opens human-only routes. Anca teaches Compel Soul, which lets Coen question the dead. Catalysts — objects that mattered to the corpse — unlock more of what they will say.
- Alchemy and recipes belong to the day. Potions, salves, balms and ointments are crafted and consumed in human form.
- Trainers matter. Ursul becomes available as a Swordmastery trainer after Ambrus’s Prisoners: Lucky Crossing on Day 4.
Playing as a Vampire
Night Coen is the version the marketing leans on: defy gravity, become a brutal force of nature, and use supernatural skills. In practice that means three abilities plus a completely different economy of healing.
- Voracious Bite — feed on rats, small animals and drained enemies to recover health. It costs an activation charge, which you earn by blocking and parrying.
- Shadowstep — a traversal gap-crosser introduced in the prologue and used constantly afterwards.
- Planeshift — aim at a wall, Shadowstep onto it and walk up it; Shadowstep again to walk across the ceiling. Some routes are simply unreachable without it.
- Claws — a melee option that does not need a weapon, and the reason Kobold ambushes in the mines are survivable with no gear.
- Clawriding — descending cliff faces by clawing down them, used right after the mine escape.
The trade-off
Vampire form heals differently: blood, not food, is what keeps Coen going. Plan around feeding on rats, animals and enemies when you expect a long stretch on the night side.
Confirmed Abilities and Where You Get Them
These are the abilities documented in the opening hours. Later unlocks are added as they are verified rather than predicted.
| Ability | Form | What it does | Where you get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dirty Trick | Human | Active ability available from the start. | Unlocked when Withering Away begins. |
| Charge | Human | An active ability that needs one activation slot equipped. | Reward from Like Father, Like Son; learn it from the manual. |
| Compel Soul | Human (witchcraft) | Speak to the dead. Needs Catalysts — objects that mattered to the corpse — to get more than a sentence. | Taught by Anca during Smoke and Ashes. |
| Burning Blood | Human (witchcraft) | Granted alongside Astral Communication. | Reward from completing Smoke and Ashes. |
| Astral Communication | Human (witchcraft) | Granted alongside Burning Blood. | Reward from completing Smoke and Ashes. |
| Voracious Bite | Vampire | Feed on rats, animals or drained enemies to recover health. Costs an activation charge. | Unlocked during All Good Things. |
| Shadowstep | Vampire | Traversal: cross gaps and reach distant ledges. | Unlocked during All Good Things. |
| Planeshift | Vampire | Traversal: walk up walls and across ceilings after Shadowstep. | Taught during Bad Blood in the silver mines. |
| Claws | Vampire | A weapon-free melee option with its own parries and dodges. | Available from the moment Coen turns. |
How the World Reacts
Which form you use changes what is available: some objectives can only be reached at night, and some conversations only exist during the day. Because advancing a quest shifts the Day Phase, the same quest can feel like two different jobs depending on when you push it forward.
The practical consequence is that you should decide whether a thread is a day job or a night job before you spend time on it. A quest you can only finish as a vampire is, in effect, a quest you cannot finish today.
Where Each Form Wins
Rather than one being stronger, the forms are answers to different problems. Picking the wrong one usually does not fail a quest — it just makes it slower.
| Situation | Better form | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Open fights against armed soldiers | Human | Sword, parries and blocking give you the safer, more controllable exchange. |
| Reaching a ledge or crossing a chasm | Vampire | Shadowstep and Planeshift reach places nothing else can. |
| Questioning a corpse for clues | Human | Compel Soul is a witchcraft ability taught in human form. |
| Low on health with no potions | Vampire | Voracious Bite on nearby animals restores health for free. |
| Long exploration with no combat | Either | Exploration costs no time either way — use whichever form you are already in. |
Does the Choice Lock You In?
No. The day-night cycle drives the form, not a permanent decision you make at a menu. You will play both, repeatedly, and the story tracks how you use them: whether you fight for your humanity or embrace the cursed powers is one of the threads that shape the ending you get.
Corruption / hunger mechanic
Players searching for a corruption or hunger system are asking a real question, but we have not confirmed how it is implemented. We will not publish numbers or thresholds we cannot verify.

FAQ
Can you play The Blood of Dawnwalker as a vampire only?
No. Coen is human by day and vampire by night, and both loops are part of the game. You can lean on one where it is strongest, but the story gives you both forms.
What vampire abilities does Coen have?
Confirmed from the opening hours: Voracious Bite (feed to heal), Shadowstep (traversal), Planeshift (walk on walls and ceilings) and claws as a weapon option. More unlock as the story progresses.
Can vampires eat normal food?
In vampire form, blood is what sustains Coen: feeding on animals and enemies restores health, rather than eating.
Which form is better for beginners?
Human form is the safer teacher: the sword, blocking and parrying give you readable exchanges, and potions are easier to manage than feeding. Vampire form is better for movement and for healing without supplies.
